Ostran Mildberry - The Correct Party

Ostran Mildberry made it to the comfortable age of 55 years old without much excitement or danger. He is a great lover of books; he loves books so much that his modest house in Lamascus was almost a library of it's own. The smell of leather bound covers and gilt pages fills him with a joy that is almost approached by his great love of tea.

He is a widower, his wife having passed on from a coughing disease when they were in their forties. She was a gardener, and he has kept up their old garden as best as he can, though he hasn't the green thumb that she had. He never remarried, preferring instead to drift into a simple life as a bookkeeper.

Before retiring, he was a scholar and a librarian at one of the great libraries of Lamascus. His favorite subject, his one mark of eccentricity, was the forbidden lore of the world. That knowledge that was passed in whispered circles, the purview of secret societies and cults. Perhaps because of his rather dull life, he found such lore to be quite exciting, and collected it as one would strange coins or peculiar river stones. He certainly wasn't going to put that lore to practical use, goodness no! But as the sun sets, sitting in his most comfortable chair with a mug of hot tea, a tome of irresistible secrets was his favorite way to spend time.

Indeed it was one such summer day, his window open out into the garden, that things became quite strange for Ostran Mildberry. He had found a really rather disused tome, written in that esoteric language known as Deep Speech. It had been brought in as part of a huge lot of books from a nobleman who had no heirs, and heaped onto a shelf where it had sit untouched for years before he had discovered it. The cover of it was emblazoned with a simple yellow circle with a smaller yellow triangle inside of it.

He knew a bit of the Deep Speech due to his study of occult tomes, and so set about trying to decipher it. It was in the midst of this, as he was stumbling his way through a particularly strange bit of speech, that he took a sip of tea, and was contacted by M-KATH.

It happened like a bolt. The sun had fallen completely beyond the horizon, and he felt a pull somewhere in his stomach. It lurched uncomfortably, and he was suddenly staring at his limp body from somewhere in the vicinity of his ceiling. Even worse, the tea cup had fallen over and tea was spilling all over the ancient tome. He tried to give a cry, but due to his current incorporeal predicament couldn't make much sound.

Then, another tug, another lurch, and he was suddenly blazing through a field of stars. He was later thankful that he had no bowels to empty at the time. Finally the pull slowed, and stopped, leaving him to float among the azure mist of a nebula (he had also studied a bit of astronomy, so knew generally what a nebula was). There within the nebula he saw floating a strange yellowish crystal, that seemed to be pulsing with light. It took him a moment to realize the pulsing had a pattern to it. It took him yet another moment to realize that the crystal was speaking to him as it pulsed.

Speaking is a good enough term to describe the communication, anyway, though it was really more a matter of sending very strong impressions to his general vicinity. The thing was called M-KATH. It was an entity of solid energy (Ostran, who had also studied a bit of physics, took offense to this notion, but decided it best to keep his then absent mouth shut), who sought contact with the far planes of the multiverse. It had contacted some from his plane, who had written a book in order to contact more. The reason for this contact was simple: it wanted to experience material reality, and could only do so using physical beings as conduits for it's energy. It was very interested in experiencing physical reality at first because it was really rather novel, but soon it came to realize that other Far Beings had made contact with physical reality; and these beings weren't so genial.

So, it had set into motion the plan with the book to sort of try and stop the other Far Beings from causing too much chaos and havoc, as they are want to do. Horrid things like sacrifices, dark rituals to try and bring them more into the world, and the like. He explained that many of the entities of the void are violent or insane by his standards, and don't like to so much experience different realities as possess and abuse them.

Ostran thought this was all very nice, but wondered what exactly M-KATH wanted with him. He was just a simple librarian after all. M-KATH, however, indicated that it had complete confidence in Ostran and would offer him a pact; in return for a connection to it's radiant power, Ostran would help try to root out the dark things that try to infest his reality, and do positive things in general.

Ostran, of course, wanted to know a bit more about the contract before making it, but at this time he noticed that he was actually sitting in his chair, with his lap wet and cold. It had to have been midnight at least. Rubbing his eyes, he got up, looked forlornly down at the now ruined book, and went to the window to close it, trying to shake the strange dream from his mind.

There at the window, a shooting star arced across the sky. He muttered something about a coincidence and closed the window, when something in the reflection of the glass gave him pause. His own face, and upon his forehead the glowing symbol of a triangle within a circle only now beginning to dim and fade away.
